American Bells

Clematis crispa L.

SWAMP LEATHER-FLOWER

Clematis crispa is native to thirteen states, grows as far north as Illinois, and is found in all of the southeastern US west to Texas in bottomlands and swamps. It flowers from spring through summer. Flower color, leaf shape and thickness is variable. Bell shaped flowers are pale blue to lavender to pink with broadly expanded crispate margins. This species has remained compact in my garden, topping out at 5-6 feet. It produces flowers steadily all summer. Grows well in a garden setting.
